A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the tea gardens in Darjeeling, India. As an avid tea lover, I was excited to learn more about the art of tea tasting and the intricate process that goes into creating the perfect cuppa.

I was drawn to the multiple tea tastings that took place during a typical day. Each tea garden up and down the hillside was marked, and the tea from each field was tasted separately. The process of tea tasting takes a particular skill that involves slurping the tea in with air to taste the flavour. Then you spit it out and taste the next one alongside it, taking notes as you go.

As I learned more about the tea tasting process, I was struck by the complexity of the practice. Each tea has its own unique flavour profile that can be influenced by factors like soil composition, weather patterns, and altitude. Tasters must be able to discern the subtle differences between teas and identify the notes that make each one distinct.

The art of tea tasting is not just about identifying flavours, however. It is also about understanding the history and culture of tea, and appreciating the care and attention that goes into cultivating the perfect brew.

In the tea gardens of Darjeeling, I gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of tea. The art of tea tasting is a journey of the senses, and one that I will always cherish.

Tea tasting is a highly skilled and complex art that requires a deep understanding of the subtleties of tea. By appreciating the art of tea tasting, we can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich history and culture of tea.
